The National Executive Committee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is scheduled to meet today to consider and approve the party’s position on proposed amendments to Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.
The meeting follows a review of the Constitution Review Committee’s report and the government’s response to the proposed reforms.
The NPP’s Constitutional and Legal Affairs Policy Committee conducted the review and prepared a position paper outlining the party’s views on the recommendations.
The document has been submitted to the party’s presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and the National Executive Committee for consideration and adoption.
Among the proposals under consideration are a five-year presidential and parliamentary term, the election of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), an increase in the number of Members of Parliament from 275 to 300, and a reduction in the minimum age for presidential candidates from 40 to 35.
Other proposals supported by the government include allowing Ghanaians with dual citizenship to contest parliamentary elections, abolishing the death penalty, and giving all eligible members of political parties equal voting rights in the selection of parliamentary and presidential candidates.
The NPP says its position was informed by its participation in the national constitutional review process, including submissions it made to the Constitution Review Committee.
Following today’s meeting, the party is expected to announce which proposals it supports, opposes or wants modified.
