The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced plans for a major investment of about GH₵3 billion aimed at improving infrastructure across Ghana’s Senior High Schools (SHS).
The proposed intervention is expected to address challenges including overcrowding, inadequate classroom spaces, limited science and technology facilities, and other infrastructure gaps affecting second-cycle institutions.
According to the Education Minister, the programme will focus on expanding and upgrading facilities in schools across the country, including the construction of new schools and the rehabilitation of existing ones.
Mr Iddrisu explained that the initiative forms part of government’s broader efforts to strengthen the Free Senior High School programme by ensuring that increased enrolment is matched with improved learning environments and better resources for students and teachers.
The investment will support projects such as classrooms, science laboratories, ICT centres, libraries, and other essential facilities needed to enhance teaching and learning outcomes.
The Education Minister noted that procurement processes and other necessary arrangements would be undertaken to ensure the timely implementation of the projects.
The government says the infrastructure expansion is part of ongoing reforms aimed at improving the quality, accessibility, and sustainability of secondary education in Ghana.
