The U.S. Embassy in Accra has said that it will temporarily limit most routine consular operations from July 20 through July 31, 2026 while scheduled maintenance is carried out at the mission.

The Embassy said normal services are expected to return on Monday, August 3, 2026, and urged the public to plan ahead for any travel or document related needs during the shutdown period.

In a statement released on Tuesday, July 14, the mission explained that the maintenance work would disrupt the delivery of most non emergency consular services for the duration of the exercise.

As a result, services including walk in notarial appointments and the processing of Consular Reports of Death Abroad will be unavailable until full operations restart.

Even so, the Embassy said some key services will continue. People who have already received an email confirming that their U.S. passport or Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA) is ready may still collect those documents on Thursdays from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The mission added that adult passport renewal requests submitted through its drop box system will still be handled during the maintenance window. Applicants were directed to consult the guidance posted on the Embassy’s official website.

Support for U.S. citizens facing emergencies in Ghana will also remain active. Those in need of urgent help have been instructed to reach the duty officer through the Embassy’s emergency phone number.

The Embassy encouraged the public to keep checking its website for further notices on when full services will resume and for any other changes to its operations.

The Consular Section in Accra handles a broad range of services, including passport issuance and renewal, birth registration abroad, notarial services, emergency assistance, and other citizenship related matters.
