Kylian Mbappe has become the highest-scoring player in FIFA World Cup knockout-stage history after netting twice in France’s 3-0 victory over Sweden in the Round of 32.
The French captain’s brace took his tally to nine goals in World Cup knockout matches, surpassing the previous record of eight shared by Brazilian greats Leonidas and Ronaldo.
Mbappe reached the landmark in just nine knockout appearances, underlining his remarkable consistency in football’s biggest and most pressure-filled matches.
The 27-year-old produced another clinical display as France comfortably booked their place in the Round of 16. His two goals also strengthened his position in the race for the Golden Boot, taking his tournament tally to six goals.
The achievement adds another chapter to an already outstanding World Cup career. Mbappe announced himself on the global stage during France’s triumphant 2018 World Cup campaign and has continued to shine in every tournament since.
His most memorable performance came in the 2022 World Cup final against Argentina, where he scored a stunning hat-trick and finished as the competition’s top scorer with eight goals.
With his latest double against Sweden, Mbappe’s overall World Cup tally now stands at 18 goals, leaving him just one behind Lionel Messi’s all-time record of 19.
France’s progress to the next round gives Mbappe additional opportunities to break that record and further cement his legacy among the greatest players in World Cup history.
As Les Bleus continue their pursuit of another world title, Mbappe’s ability to deliver in decisive matches remains one of their biggest weapons. His latest milestone once again highlights why he is widely regarded as one of the defining players of his generation.
