South Africa secured a historic place in the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after edging South Korea 1-0 in their decisive final Group A match on Thursday.

Bafana Bafana entered the encounter knowing only a victory would guarantee progression after collecting just one point from their opening two matches following a defeat to Mexico and a draw against Czechia.

The South Koreans made an energetic start and nearly took the lead inside three minutes. Defender Min-Jae Kim rose highest to meet a cross into the box, but his effort was blocked by the South African defence before it could threaten the goal.

South Korea continued to press and created another promising opportunity five minutes later when Kang-In Lee found space inside the penalty area. However, the attacking midfielder failed to hit the target, sending his effort narrowly wide.

After surviving the early pressure, South Africa gradually settled into the contest and began to create chances of their own.

Their best opportunity of the first half came midway through the opening period when Evidence Makgopa reacted quickest to a loose ball inside the box and unleashed a powerful strike. South Korean goalkeeper Seung-Gyu Kim was equal to the task, producing a brilliant reflex save to keep the scores level.

With both teams battling for a crucial breakthrough, the decisive moment arrived in the 63rd minute.

Tshepang Moremi played a key role in unlocking the South Korean defence before delivering a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Thapelo Maseko. The winger kept his composure and calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner to send the South African supporters into celebration.

The goal transformed the contest as South Korea pushed forward in search of an equaliser. The Asian side dominated possession in the closing stages, but South Africa’s defence stood firm under intense pressure.

Bafana Bafana remained disciplined and organised, frustrating their opponents and successfully protecting their slender advantage until the final whistle.

The victory secured second place in Group A for South Africa after Mexico defeated Czechia in the group’s other fixture to finish top of the standings.

The result marks a significant milestone for South African football, with Bafana Bafana advancing to the World Cup knockout stage for the first time in the nation’s history.

Having overcome a difficult start to the tournament, South Africa now head into the Round of 32 full of confidence and belief as they look to continue their impressive World Cup journey.
