The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that the ban on extravagant post-examination celebrations will apply to all schools across Ghana, covering both public and private institutions.

The directive follows growing concerns over lavish displays during school celebrations, including expensive gifts and activities that authorities believe shift attention away from academic achievement and the values schools are expected to promote.

According to the Education Minister, schools are meant to remain centres for learning, discipline, and character development rather than platforms for displaying wealth. He stressed that such celebrations should not become part of the culture within Ghana’s educational system.

The Ghana Education Service has also been tasked with ensuring compliance with the directive and taking action against violations. School authorities have been warned to help maintain discipline and uphold the purpose of educational institutions.

The move comes after public discussions over some post-WASSCE celebrations where students received expensive gifts, including vehicles and other high-value items. Authorities say the policy is aimed at promoting equality among students and preventing situations that may create social pressure or divisions.

The government has indicated that further measures and guidelines may be introduced to regulate school celebrations and ensure they reflect values of responsibility, modesty, and academic excellence.
