France is set to take part in growing international discussions on reparations for historical injustices, with French President Emmanuel Macron expected to address the upcoming Next Steps Conference on Reparatory Justice in Accra.
The announcement was made by Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who disclosed that President Macron will participate in the event, which is being hosted by President John Dramani Mahama.
The conference is expected to bring together world leaders, policymakers and other stakeholders to discuss ways of advancing reparatory justice, particularly in relation to the transatlantic enslavement of Africans and its long-term impact.
According to the Foreign Affairs Minister, Macron’s participation will provide an opportunity for a constructive discussion on historical injustices suffered by Africans, while allowing France to outline its position and commitments on the issue.
The meeting comes at a time when global conversations on reparations are gaining momentum following the adoption of a Ghana-backed United Nations resolution that recognised transatlantic enslavement as the gravest crime against humanity.
Organisers say the conference will focus on identifying practical measures that can help address historical wrongs and promote greater accountability and justice at the international level.
