Concerns over the continued enforcement of the Sanitation and Pollution Levy have resurfaced, with Team Lead of The People’s Forum, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, urging the government to scrap the tax entirely.

Speaking on the AM Show on April 7, 2026, Mr Aboagye questioned why the levy remains in place despite earlier indications that it would no longer be necessary. He noted that many Ghanaians had been led to believe the charge had been removed.

He maintained that the matter is not only about relieving citizens of the tax burden, but also about consistency in governance, stressing that authorities must stand by their earlier position on the levy.

The call comes at a time when rising fuel prices are intensifying economic pressure on households. Mr Aboagye argued that under current conditions, keeping the levy in place is difficult to justify.

He explained that fuel costs have a ripple effect across the economy, influencing transportation, food prices, and general living expenses, and said removing the levy could offer some level of relief.

While acknowledging that there may have been reasons for maintaining the tax in the past, he insisted that prevailing economic realities demand a different approach.

Mr Aboagye therefore urged the government to take immediate action to abolish the Sanitation and Pollution Levy and align policy decisions with its earlier assurances.
