The President Of Ghana, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama has called for calm and meaningful dialogue in the ongoing national conversation surrounding LGBTQ+ issues, noting that while the topic is significant, it is not Ghana’s most pressing concern at the moment.
Speaking at a Presidential Dialogue with Civil Society Organisations at Jubilee House in Accra on Monday, March 30, he described the issue as highly sensitive and one that often sparks strong emotions, even in more liberal societies. He urged Ghanaians to approach discussions with caution and respect, guided by the country’s values.
The President stressed that government priorities remain focused on addressing urgent socio-economic challenges such as access to education, healthcare, employment, food, and housing.
He also pointed out that debates over the private member’s bill in Parliament reflect the diversity of opinions within the country. According to him, any outcome must be consistent with the Constitution, protect human rights, and promote national unity.
President Mahama further emphasized the importance of resolving such matters through democratic processes, dialogue, and adherence to the rule of law, while maintaining respectful engagement with the international community.
