Drivers Hint at Possible Fare Review as Fuel Prices Show Signs of Rising

Transport operators in Ghana say commuters could soon face higher fares if the expected increase in fuel prices takes effect in the coming days.

The warning comes from the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), which says commercial drivers are already struggling with the rising cost of operating vehicles. Union officials say a significant jump in petroleum prices may force a reconsideration of current transport fares.

Industry figures suggest fuel prices could climb noticeably during the next pricing window. Petrol, which previously sold at about GH¢10.46 per litre earlier in March, is projected to move up to roughly GH¢11.57, while diesel may rise sharply from GH¢11.42 to about GH¢14.35 per litre. Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is also expected to increase within the same period.

Officials within the union say such developments could place additional strain on drivers, whose operating expenses continue to grow. Maintenance items such as spare parts, lubricants and general vehicle servicing have all become more expensive, making it difficult for operators to maintain their businesses without reviewing fares.

The Industrial Relations Officer of the GPRTU, Abass Imoro, explained that although some drivers have attempted to increase fares on their own in the past, the union intervened to prevent unauthorized adjustments.
“We work for profit, and for some time now fares have remained unchanged,” he said, adding that the union had to step in when some drivers attempted unilateral increases.

Mr. Imoro further indicated that the union typically avoids rushing into fare increments, but admitted that a substantial jump in fuel costs could make a review unavoidable.
“If the price of fuel goes up, then naturally everyone should expect a change in lorry fares,” he stated.
