Johnson Asiedu Nketiah , the national chairman of the New Democratic Congress, has cautioned that it is unrealistic and unsustainable for the government to place all graduates on its payroll, stressing that the country’s limited tax revenue cannot support such a system.

He therefore urged young people, particularly university students, to focus on identifying problems within their communities and developing practical solutions that can be turned into sustainable businesses and sources of employment.

Mr. Asiedu Nketiah made the remarks during the launch of the Volta Youth Development Fund in Ho on Saturday, March 7, 2026.

According to him, Ghana’s education system largely prepares students to look for jobs rather than equipping them with the skills needed to create employment opportunities.

He noted that universities in many developed countries focus on researching societal challenges and producing solutions that help drive economic growth, adding that Ghana must move in the same direction.

Mr. Asiedu Nketiah described the Volta Youth Development Fund as an important initiative that could support young people with innovative ideas to establish businesses and create jobs.

He expressed optimism that similar initiatives could be replicated in other regions to help address youth unemployment across the country. To support the initiative, he donated GH¢500,000 to the fund.

The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, thanked Mr. Asiedu Nketiah for the contribution and encouraged individuals as well as corporate organisations to support the fund to help expand opportunities for young entrepreneurs in the region.
