The Lordina Foundation, led by First Lady Lordina Dramani Mahama has constructed and handed over an ultramodern maternity and children’s ward to the Asukawkaw Clinic in the Oti Region.

The project followed an appeal made on March 2, 2025, by Nana Odam Gyamfi III, Paramount Chief of the Akroso Asukawkaw Traditional Area.

Speaking at the commissioning, Mrs. Mahama said the facility was carefully designed to serve mothers and children with dignity and excellence. The ward includes a reception and waiting area, doctors’ and nurses’ offices, maternity and children’s wards, a fully equipped operating theatre, delivery room, sterilisation room and a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

She said the facility has been fitted with life-saving equipment such as electric beds, operating tables, infant incubators, ultrasound systems, caesarean and delivery sets, ECG machines, phototherapy machines, patient monitors and oxygen support systems. The ward is also powered with solar panels to provide emergency lighting and reduce electricity consumption.

“We have also provided furniture, waiting chairs, cabinets and cleaning supplies to ensure the facility is ready to serve from day one,” she noted.

Mrs. Mahama disclosed that the Asukawkaw project is the fourth modern health facility completed by the Foundation, following similar projects in Bole, Nkoranza and Bodom, with renovations also carried out at the Hohoe and Adabraka clinics.

She stressed that the Foundation’s mission is rooted in the belief that no woman should die while giving birth and no child should begin life without proper care because of where they are born. She urged health authorities and the community to protect and maintain the facility for present and future generations.

The first lady also reiterated the Foundation’s commitment to strengthening resilient health systems, particularly for women, girls and the elderly, and expressed gratitude to partners including OAFLAD and Meck Foundation.

In appreciation, Nana Odam Gyamfi III installed Mrs. Mahama as the Development Queen Mother (Nkosuohemaa) of the Akroso Asukawkaw Traditional Area and thanked her for the transformative health project for the community.
