The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology has announced new measures for managing student trails following the suspension of supplementary examinations for the 2025/26 and 2026/27 academic years, as part of efforts to revert to the old academic calendar.
The decision was taken at the 440th Special Meeting of the Academic Board held on Monday, February 16, 2026, where the Board approved the proposed academic calendar for the 2026/2027 academic year, subject to modifications.
Under the new arrangement, supplementary examinations will not be organised during the two academic years. Instead, the Academic Board has approved a special dispensation that allows students with trail courses to add up to two trails to their regular semester workload and write those papers at the end of the relevant semester. The policy is intended to support student progression while maintaining academic standards.
For students with more than two trail courses, the policy introduces a phased approach. Such students will be required to select only two trail courses to register in addition to their regular courses in a given semester. They will write those two trail papers alongside their normal examinations. Any remaining trail courses beyond the two allowed will be carried forward to subsequent semesters, where the same rule will apply until all outstanding courses are cleared.
This means students with multiple trails will no longer have the option of clearing all outstanding papers at once through supplementary examinations. Instead, trails will be written gradually across semesters, reducing academic overload and aligning assessment with the regular teaching and examination structure.
The directive was contained in a memorandum dated February 17, 2026, signed by Lucy Diawuo, Esq., Secretary to the Academic Board and Deputy Registrar for Academic Affairs. It was addressed to all Provosts and Directors, including the Institute of Distance Learning and the School of Graduate Studies. The Academic Board has called for the cooperation of all stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition under the revised system.
