The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Ashanti West Region has successfully recovered GH¢4,388,264.59 from customers who were using power illegally in 2025.
According to Mr. George Amoah, General Manager of ECG Ashanti West, this amount is part of GH¢5,812,727.06 in surcharges levied on those found to have consumed over 3 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) without proper billing.
He noted that the company has been intensifying efforts to track down power theft, a move aimed at reducing commercial losses and ensuring electricity supply remains reliable for paying customers.
“Electricity stolen through illegal connections not only affects ECG’s ability to settle debts with suppliers like GRIDCo, VRA, and Independent Power Producers (IPPs), but it also causes low voltage and frequent outages,” Mr. Amoah explained.
Revenue protection teams conducted inspections across various communities, including Bantama and Denkyemuoso, visiting over 8,000 premises ranging from homes and eateries to hotels and cold storage facilities. Offences uncovered included meter bypassing, unauthorized direct wiring, and tampering with meters.
Mr. Amoah warned that tampering with electricity is a criminal offence under Ghanaian law. He also highlighted the safety risks, such as electrocution and fire hazards, linked to illegal connections.
ECG is urging residents to report suspicious meter activity or unlicensed wiring to the nearest ECG office, rather than attempting to handle it themselves.
