Aboboyaa Still Illegal Under Ghana’s Road Traffic Laws – NRSA

The Director General of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Abraham Amaliba, has restated that tricycles, widely known as aboboyaa, are not permitted under Ghana’s current road traffic regulations, even though they are increasingly seen on roads nationwide.
During an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show on Tuesday, February 10, Amaliba explained that the absence of established laws and regulatory guidelines has made it difficult for state agencies to regulate the use of these vehicles. He noted that without formally approved laws and guidelines, the NRSA is unable to take full control of tricycle operations and is limited to enforcing existing traffic rules .
He acknowledged that tricycles are commonly used, particularly for moving goods within urban and peri-urban areas, but emphasized that their activities have not yet been officially approved by law. According to him, critical issues such as the type of loads they may carry and the specific functions they could perform within the transport sector are still under consideration.
Until those matters are resolved and the necessary legislation is enacted, Amaliba said authorities will continue to rely on enforcement, adding that the law allows members of the public to apprehend offenders and hand them over to the police where necessary.
