The government has announced plans to rename Kotoka International Airport as Accra International Airport, a move expected to spark national debate once formally presented to Parliament.
The announcement was made by Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga while addressing journalists ahead of the first sitting of the Second Session of the 9th Parliament. According to him, the proposed change forms part of a broader legislative agenda aimed at aligning public institutions with Ghana’s democratic values and national identity.
Mr Ayariga disclosed that the Minister for Transport will lay a bill before Parliament to effect the change. He explained that the renaming will follow due legislative process and will be subjected to parliamentary scrutiny and approval.
“And we are changing the name of our airport from Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport. So a bill will be brought by the Minister for Transport for the name of the airport to be changed,” the Majority Leader stated.
He stressed that such decisions must be grounded in law and guided by the will of the people, noting that Parliament will play a central role in debating and approving the proposal once it is officially introduced.
Beyond the airport renaming, Mr Ayariga outlined several other key bills expected to be brought before the House. These include a Maritime and Related Offences Bill, road traffic regulations aimed at addressing the legalization and regulation of commercial motorcycle and tricycle operations, popularly known as okada, as well as measures to enforce discipline among riders.
He also mentioned upcoming regulations related to the Ghana Shippers Authority and indicated that Parliament would be asked to approve certain international bylaws as part of government business in the session.
The proposed renaming of Kotoka International Airport, one of Ghana’s most prominent national landmarks, is expected to attract significant public interest and debate due to the historical significance of its current name
