The Blues arrived full of confidence after their Premier League win over Crystal Palace, while Napoli were looking to bounce back from a heavy 3–0 defeat to Juventus. Antonio Conte’s side were also weakened by the absence of several key players, including Frank Zambo Anguissa and Matteo Politano.
Chelsea started brightly and were rewarded in the 18th minute when Enzo Fernández converted from the penalty spot after a handball from a Reece James free kick. Napoli responded strongly, with Antonio Vergara netting his first goal for the club in the 33rd minute following defensive lapses from Chelsea. The hosts then completed the turnaround just before half-time as Rasmus Højlund made it 2–1.
With Chelsea outside the top eight at the break and Napoli boasting an impressive unbeaten home record, the task looked daunting. However, the Blues showed character. João Pedro equalised in the 61st minute before completing the comeback with a clinical finish in the 81st minute after a flowing attacking move.
Cole Palmer starred with two assists as Chelsea sealed their fifth win in six matches across all competitions, avoiding the playoff round and building serious momentum. While questions remain about defensive consistency, this was a statement European night for Liam Rosenior’s side.
For Napoli, it was a bitter end to Antonio Conte’s European campaign, one that promised much but ultimately delivered disappointment.
