President John Dramani Mahama will lead the first Accra Reset dialogue on January 22, on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland.
The high-level meeting will bring together leaders from Africa and the Global South to explore new approaches to international cooperation amid growing global challenges. President Mahama, who chairs the initiative’s Presidential Council, will focus on strengthening sovereign capacity and rethinking global partnerships in a complex and fragmented world.
Other council members expected include President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi of Egypt, President William Ruto of Kenya, and President Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Nigeria and Papua New Guinea will be represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima and Prime Minister James Marape, respectively.
The gathering will also feature several former Heads of State, including Olusegun Obasanjo, Helen Clark, Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, and Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, who make up the initiative’s Guardians Circle.
The Davos meeting will formally launch priority programmes following the initiative’s unveiling at the 2025 UN General Assembly and endorsement at the G20 Summit in Johannesburg.
According to organisers, the Accra Reset comes at a critical moment, amid rising global tensions, weakening aid systems, trade disputes, climate shocks, and overlapping crises. The initiative aims to better position countries of the Global South to respond effectively through stronger sovereignty and balanced international partnerships.
President Mahama has described the Accra Reset as complementary to his domestic reform programme, the Resetting Ghana Agenda, highlighting the connection between national transformation and global equity.
In a statement, the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, quoted the President saying sovereignty “means the capacity to execute national visions while building strategic partnerships, particularly within Africa and across the Global South, that advance mutual interests.”
