Arise Activist Group Stages Protest at US Embassy, Calls For Ofori-Atta’s Return

Members of the Arise Ghana group on Tuesday 20th January has held a demonstration in front of the United States Embassy in Accra, calling on US authorities to support efforts to return former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to Ghana to answer to ongoing investigations.

Dressed in red and black, protesters gathered, displaying placards urging the immediate return of Ken Ofori-Atta and calling for transparency and accountability in matters relating to his time in public office.

Organisers of the protest said the action was intended to draw attention to what they describe as delays in securing the former minister’s return, despite ongoing probes by Ghana’s Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) into several transactions approved during his tenure.

Ken Ofori-Atta, who served as Finance Minister from 2017 to 2024, has been at the centre of public debate over alleged financial and procurement irregularities, claim which remain under investigation.

Arise Ghana maintains that accountability must apply equally to all public officials, insisting that being outside the country should not shield anyone from scrutiny under Ghana’s laws.

Although no official timeline has been given for any extradition or return process, the group says it will continue to push for action until the matter is resolved, reflecting growing public pressure for accountability.
