GPRTU CAN NOT SANCTION DRIVERS WHO ARE NOT MEMBERS OF THE UNION- GPRTU PRO SAYS

Every new year comes with its own challenges, and for many commuters, one familiar issue has resurfaced, which is unapproved transport fares and short routes. While the situation is not entirely new, its impact this year has attracted significant public attention.

Speaking on Focus FM’s TEKNOKRAT Show on January 15,  Mr. Abbas Ibrahim Morois, the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), explained that fare related concerns are commonly experienced at the beginning of each year.

According to him, this year’s development is not unusual; however, the strong public reaction has brought the issue into sharper focus.
Mr. Morois clarified that the GPRTU cannot sanction drivers who are not members of the union.

“GPRTU is unable to punish non-member drivers who charge unapproved fares because, such drivers do not fall under its regulatory authority” he revealed.

Drawing a comparison, he cited South Africa, where the government owns and manages public transport systems. He noted that if the Ghanaian government chooses to adopt a similar approach, the GPRTU would be willing to offer its technical expertise and operational support to ensure efficiency.

He further advised passengers that “any driver who charges more than the approved fare or operates outside GPRTU regulations should be reported to the police,” emphasizing that law enforcement remains the appropriate authority to handle such cases.
