Senegal and Morocco Set Up AFCON 2026 Final After Dramatic Semi-Final Victories

Senegal and hosts Morocco will face off in the final of the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations after securing hard-fought victories over Egypt and Nigeria in the semi-finals.

In the first semi-final, Senegal defeated Egypt 1–0, with Sadio Mané scoring the decisive goal in the 78th minute. The match was closely contested, with both teams showing strong defensive organization and limited chances in the first half. Senegal dominated possession and eventually broke the deadlock through Mané’s clinical finish. Egypt pressed for an equaliser in the closing stages but were unable to break down a disciplined Senegal defence.

The win sends Senegal into their second AFCON final since 2021, when they won the tournament for the first time. It also extends Egypt’s wait for another continental title, with their last triumph coming in 2010.

The second semi-final was filled with drama as Morocco overcame Nigeria on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes. Morocco controlled much of the first half, but Nigeria’s defence stood firm under sustained pressure. The Super Eagles improved after the break, creating a more balanced contest, yet neither side managed to score during regulation or extra time.

Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou proved decisive in the penalty shootout, saving two spot-kicks to give Morocco a 4–2 victory. His heroics sparked wild celebrations as the Atlas Lions booked their place in the AFCON final for the first time since 2004. Veteran striker Youssef En-Nesyri converted the winning penalty to seal the result.

Morocco, who last won the competition in 1976, will now have the opportunity to end a long wait for continental glory on home soil. Senegal, meanwhile, are aiming to add a second AFCON title to their historic 2021 triumph.

The final between Senegal and Morocco promises to be a thrilling conclusion to AFCON 2026, as two of Africa’s strongest teams battle for the continent’s biggest football prize.
