Government Set to Kickstart 24-Hour Economy Policy This Year

The Government of Ghana is set to roll out its proposed 24-Hour Economy policy later this year, following the completion of preparatory work.

The Minister of State responsible for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, said the programme is intended to support continuous business operations across selected sectors, with the broader goal of expanding economic activity, generating employment and improving productivity.

The 24-Hour Economy initiative is a flagship programme of the current government, which is expected to make room for businesses to operate around the clock, thereby extending operational hours for key sectors and services.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, Mr Kwakye Ofosu explained that the government deliberately took time to properly design the policy to avoid the implementation challenges that have affected some past initiatives.

“President Mahama and his government do not believe in ad-hoc policies. We don’t believe in sloganeering. If you want to set up a policy, it is better to be meticulous and take the time required so that when you take off, you don’t suffer the policy hiccups that other programmes have suffered,” he said.

He noted that previous initiatives had sometimes failed due to how they were designed and implemented, prompting the government to adopt a more structured approach. He revealed that a dedicated 24-Hour Economy Authority has been established and will be tasked with coordinating and overseeing the execution of the policy nationwide.

“At this moment, the presidential advisor and his team have been able to put up the framework for a 24-Hour Economy Authority, which will have the powers to implement this seamlessly. In all likelihood, this year, the implementation will begin,” Mr. Kwakye Ofosu said.

He added that once the authority is fully established, interested organisations will be able to register and benefit from the incentives and packages outlined under the programme.
