KNUST Library Unveils Digital Vision to Support 21st-Century Teaching and Research

The University Library of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has initiated discussions on transforming the university’s library system into a fully digital knowledge hub to meet the academic demands of the 21st century.

The Association revealed its intention during a meeting with the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA), KNUST Chapter, on the theme “The Role of the Academic Library in a Modern University.” The engagement brought members together to explore strategies that will enhance the operation of the KNUST Library in the fast-paced digital era.

The University Librarian, Dr. Richard Bruce Lamptey, stated that the KNUST Library system, being the knowledge hub of the University, plays a crucial role in achieving the institution’s vision of becoming Africa’s premier centre of excellence in science and technology. He emphasised that access to quality learning resources is vital in supporting teaching, research, and the dissemination of knowledge.

He explained that the Library operates within a hybrid ecosystem and is one of the largest academic library networks in Ghana. Dr Lamptey highlighted key services provided by the Library, including e-resources, institutional repository, research support, copyright guidance, digital learning tools, and book collection, which are also accessible to the public.

He, however, acknowledged persistent challenges limiting the Library’s full digital transformation.

“The Library faces several challenges, including limited use of AI and analytics, low mobile integration, underdeveloped virtual support systems, unstable digital platforms and inadequate disability inclusion. We call on all stakeholders to support us in overcoming these challenges,” he said.

According to him, the vision of the KNUST Library is to become a world-class, digitally empowered knowledge centre. He proposed modernising physical infrastructure and ICT systems, improving human resource capacity, and enhancing administrative efficiency to support teaching, learning, and research.

Representatives of GAUA commended the Library’s vital contribution to academic productivity and pledged continued collaboration to support its development agenda.
