Professor Emmanuel Adinyira has emphasized the importance of transferring safety and operational practices from formal construction sites to surrounding communities. Speaking on Focus FM’s Teknokrat show with host Sika Audrey Dzifa, he explained that his inaugural lecture that took place on 28th August, 2025 at the Great Hall in KNUST, draws inspiration from how structured practices in the construction sector can positively influence everyday life.
According to him, communities living near construction sites are often indirectly exposed to risks without receiving the same protection that site workers enjoy. “On site we have different types of nose masks that constructors use to protect themselves, but these safety measures do not extend to people around the site who are also exposed to this harm,” he said.
Prof. Adinyira noted that his lecture explores how construction sites can be used as teaching spaces to educate nearby residents and minimize risks. He added that his interest in the subject stems from his personal observations in the classroom, on construction sites, and within communities where projects are undertaken.
“My interest in going this tangent with my lecture is stemming from what is happening with the formal construction sector,” he explained. He further stressed that the lessons from his lecture are relevant to all, since everyone lives in built environments.
“You will find out that what goes on at the project sites can be useful lessons for our lives at home, our occupations, and even our studies as students,” he said.
