Health workers deserve fairness; not abuse” – Dr. Baffour Gyimah calls for mutual understanding in hospitals

Medical Superintendent at the Asante Mampong Government Hospital, Dr. Kwasi Baffour Gyimah, has called for fairness and respect in the treatment of healthcare workers, stressing the need for better understanding between health professionals and patients. His comments follow a clash between emergency staff and a group involving a social media activist at Ridge Hospital in Accra on Monday, August 18, 2025.

Speaking on Focus FM’s TeknoKrat show with host Khayrullah Issah Dobo, Dr. Baffour condemned the abuse often directed at healthcare workers despite their sacrifices. “It is very unfair that health workers will be subjected to this level of abuse.

I think this is caused by lack of understanding within healthcare settings. In hospitals, we have rules and regulations as patients also have rights and responsibilities,” he noted.

According to him, impatience among patients often fuels these clashes. “People feel like hospitals should be a fast room where you just walk in, complain, and receive treatment.

It happens, but this particular incident has gone viral,” he explained. Dr. Baffour emphasized that profiling or stigmatizing patients based on appearance is unacceptable, adding that health professionals are trained to be empathetic and manage emotions in difficult situations.

He, however, expressed concern about the absence of strong policies to safeguard health workers who put their lives at risk in the line of duty. “When it comes to conditions of service and the risks we encounter, there are no policies that protect us.

I believe we should be treated fairly,” he added.
