An anti-corruption campaigner with the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition, Samuel Harrison Cudjoe, has thrown his support behind the Attorney General’s frequent updates on corruption cases, describing them as a strong sign of accountability and transparency. Speaking on Teknokrat on Focus FM with host Sika Audrey Dzifa, Mr. Cudjoe emphasized that the Attorney General’s consistent engagement with the media on the status of ongoing cases is commendable and not misplaced, as some critics suggest.
“I disagree with anyone who feels the AG should not be providing us regular updates. We like this kind of transparency that he has brought into the office.
I think that this kind of transparency is actually what we need,” he said. He likened the role of the Attorney General to that of an employee reporting to their employer, stressing that citizens deserve to be kept informed.
“The Attorney General is our employee. We citizens are the ones who employed somebody, and our employee is expected to regularly inform us about the work that he is doing.”
Touching on Ghana’s broader fight against corruption, Mr. Cudjoe criticized the country’s tendency to politicize corruption-related cases, a pattern he believes hampers justice. “We have become too divided along partisan lines to the extent that we are unable to punish people when they engage in corruption.
The issue quickly takes on a partisan colouring rather than being treated as a criminal venture.” He also proposed a reform to help address delays in prosecuting corruption cases.
“Let’s look at swiftly punishing corruption, and this can be done if we are going to cap the number of days a corruption case will spend in court,” he added. His comments come amid public debate over the frequency and necessity of the Attorney General’s updates on ongoing corruption scandals.
