Call for Stronger Security in Schools after Student Shooting Incident at Kumasi Adventist SHS

There is growing concern over the safety of students in Senior High Schools following a shooting incident at Kumasi Adventist Senior High School on Saturday, April 5, 2025. A student is reported to have accidentally shot a fellow student while trying to prove that a gun he was holding was fully loaded.

Media practitioner, Jeff Aboagye, has blamed weak security and poor parental supervision for the incident. He called for urgent steps to strengthen security in schools and at home to prevent future cases.

Speaking on the TeknoKrat show, Jeff questioned how a student, who was granted exeat to go home, could return to school as a day student without being properly checked. “How can a student who took an exeat return to school as a day student?

Nowadays, students are not even searched before they are allowed into the dormitories.” Jeff believes that both schools and parents share the responsibility for ensuring that students do not have access to dangerous items such as guns.

He described the situation as a wake-up call for all stakeholders in education. “Parents have a big role to play, especially when we look at the behavior of some students today.

We need to re-evaluate the role of parents in shaping the attitudes of their children. The opportunity to guide teenagers rests mostly on parents.”

He stressed the need for joint efforts between schools, parents, and communities to build support systems for young people. “Schools, communities, and parents must come together.

We need to find ways to protect students and stop things like this from happening again,” he said. The incident at Kumasi Adventist SHS has sparked wider public debate about how teenagers gain access to weapons.

Some observers say that students are increasingly exposed to violent influences from home and online sources, with very little guidance from adults. The police have not yet given full details about how the student got access to the gun.

Meanwhile, education authorities are being urged to review security policies in schools and ensure strict monitoring of students who leave and return to campus.
