IGP Shake-Up; COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno Replaces Dampare as Mahama Reshapes Police Leadership

Ghanaians were informed on Thursday, March 13, 2025, that Dr. George Akuffo Dampare has been relieved of his duties as Inspector General of Police (IGP). While some close to the presidency speculate that President John Mahama seeks a new leadership direction to align with his “Reset Ghana” agenda, others argue that the decision lacks justifiable grounds.

A section of the public believes Dampare’s dismissal is politically motivated, citing his perceived affiliation with the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Some political analysts warn that this move could negatively impact the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in future elections.

Dr. Dampare, who was appointed by former President Nana Akufo-Addo in August 2021, oversaw significant improvements in the Ghana Police Service, including a reduction in crime rates and a clampdown on alarming prophecies, especially on December 31st. Under his leadership, the police force was seen as more accountable, citizen-friendly, and focused on public safety.

President Mahama’s choice to appoint COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new IGP is seen as a strategic move, given his 40 years of experience in law enforcement. The new IGP is expected to spearhead crucial reforms and modernization efforts within the police service, a task the President deems essential to strengthening national security and restoring public confidence in law enforcement.
