Artificial intelligence is changing journalism, but it cannot replace human journalists. That is according to Ishmael Awudi, Editor of Ghana News Guide.
Awudi says AI helps make work faster by assisting with research, drafting press releases, and generating ideas. “The world is moving fast, and if you don’t catch up, you’ll be left behind.
AI improves work and makes tasks easier,” he said. He explained that AI is useful in data journalism, helping to predict trends and provide figures.
It also makes research faster by reducing the time spent in libraries or archives. AI tools, he added, help in publishing and content management by scheduling and posting content automatically.
Despite these benefits, Awudi insists AI cannot replace human journalists. “AI cannot tell stories the way humans do.
It lacks human understanding, empathy, and field experience. Even when it assists, it still needs human guidance,” he said.
He mentioned AI tools like ChatGPT, DeepSeek, and Canva AI, which assist with transcription, content creation, and design. However, he raised concerns about the quality of AI-generated content.
“AI stories often feel the same. They miss the human touch that makes stories real and relatable,” he noted.
AI is transforming journalism, but Awudi believes it will remain a tool to support, not replace, human creativity and insight.
