INDEPENDENCE WITHOUT PROGRESS? KUMASI RESIDENTS VOICE FRUSTRATIONS ON GHANA @68

Some residents of Kumasi have shared their frustrations about Ghana’s Independence Day, raising concerns about development and policies they believe are needed to strengthen the country’s independence. On Thursday, March 6, 2025, Ghana marked 68 years of independence from British colonial rule.

It was a significant day as Ghanaians celebrate their freedom and national heritage. At Tech Junction, a busy commercial hub near KNUST, the usual energy of Independence Day was missing.

Unlike previous years, the excitement seemed low. Some residents say the struggles of daily life have overshadowed the significance of the day.

A station driver pointed out that while Ghana is independent, economic hardship remains a major challenge. “Many young men struggle to find jobs after high school and end up doing hard labor or turning to crime just to survive,”

Market women also expressed their concerns. Some say foreign traders, particularly from China and Nigeria, are taking over their businesses.

“These traders have more money and sell cheaper, lower-quality goods, making competition unfair,” A bag seller, Auntie Mama, adds “It is difficult for Ghanaians to do business in foreign countries, yet foreigners in Ghana easily establish businesses and grow their wealth,”

Another trader said “Sales have been slow, making it hard to survive. She questioned whether true independence has been achieved when citizens struggle daily without government support,”

Despite these frustrations, some residents say they appreciate the peace and stability in the country. They acknowledge that safety remains one of Ghana’s strengths, even as economic challenges persist.
