His Excellency John Dramani Mahama has been advised by tax attorney Theophilus Tawiah to raise the betting tax rather than eliminate it.
He suggested to the authorities while sharing his opinion on a discussion about Ghana’s tax system on ‘The Agenda’, aired on TV3.
According to him, the president could consider increasing the tax to 20% to discourage bettors from indulging in the conduct. The betting lawyer asserted that the growing prevalence of betting in the country is worrying, given its negative impact.
“Betting tax should be increased to 20 percent to discourage persons who bet rather than eradicating it completely,”he indicated.
In the meantime, during his ministerial vetting, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the minister of finance, promised Ghanaians that one of his first actions as finance minister would be to abolish the betting tax introduced by the erstwhile government.
