While many students spend their vacations relaxing, Beatrice Alagah, a second-year BSc Human Resources Management student at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), chose a different path. Instead of taking a break, she dedicated her time to supporting her mother’s local porridge business, a role she considers both a responsibility and an opportunity.
Beatrice works alongside her mother, selling brown and white porridge, bread, and other breakfast items. This hands-on experience not only strengthens their family business but also provides Beatrice with a source of income to support her needs.
“I help her sell them, and she pays me so I can keep that money for my upkeep,” Beatrice shared. “That way, I don’t have to fully depend on her for minor expenses.”
Every morning, Beatrice rises early to assist with preparing the porridge and setting up their small stall at home. Despite the demanding schedule, she remains committed to ensuring the business runs smoothly.
“It gets tiring at times, but you have to keep going,” she admitted. Through her efforts, Beatrice has gained valuable life lessons in independence, self-reliance, and time management.
As she looks ahead, Beatrice is determined to balance her academic aspirations with her entrepreneurial spirit. “I’m learning a lot, not just in school but in life.
And I know that all of this, helping my mom, supporting myself at school, is building me up for the future,” she said. Beatrice’s story is a testament to the power of hard work and the importance of seizing opportunities to achieve financial independence and personal growth.
