Mahama Pledges Inclusion of Private Schools in Free SHS Policy; Addresses Concerns on Program’s Future

Former President, John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his commitment to include private senior high schools in Ghana’s Free Senior High School (SHS) policy. Speaking to a group of clergymen at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi on November 11, 2024, Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, outlined his vision for education should he return to power.

During the meeting, Mahama dispelled rumors that the NDC would cancel the Free SHS policy, emphasizing that his administration would maintain it but conduct a review to address challenges. He explained that the review is essential due to the increasing number of students, which has placed strain on resources and impacted the policy’s effectiveness.

He also expressed concerns about the quality of student meals, arguing that the current government’s focus on funding overlooks the need for nutritious food. Mahama’s remarks were met with chants of “the nation builder” from the clergymen.

He pledged to expand the Free SHS policy to include technical education, aiming to equip students with practical skills to enhance job opportunities. The meeting highlighted the ongoing collaboration between political and religious leaders in fostering Ghana’s national development.
