Cohabitation among university students in Ghana, particularly in private hostels, is becoming a pressing issue. A recent study conducted by the University of Cape Coast (UCC) reveals a troubling increase in cohabitation, driven by the perceived freedom and cost-saving opportunities in these hostels.
However, this trend brings with it severe social, academic, and psychological consequences. The study highlights that while some students view cohabitation as a means to reduce living expenses, it is leading to significant problems, especially for young women.
These students are facing overwhelming challenges that negatively impact their education and overall well-being. The situation is further compounded by associations with unwanted pregnancies, gender-based violence, and, in some tragic cases, suicide.
As many of these pseudo-marital relationships end in emotional distress, the need for intervention is becoming increasingly urgent. Experts advocate for stricter regulations governing private hostels, the availability of more affordable housing options, and enhanced counseling services to address this growing trend and safeguard the futures of affected students.
