The College of Health Sciences at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has bolstered the HEAL Komfo Anokye Project with a generous donation of GH₵ 125,000. This initiative aims to rejuvenate the 70-year-old Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).
In addition to the financial contribution, KNUST has pledged to provide specialized professional support from its Faculty of Built Environment. The university’s experts in architecture, quantity surveying, engineering, and biomedical sciences will play a critical role in the renovation efforts.
The Provost of Health Sciences at KNUST, Professor Christian Agyare, emphasized the importance of KATH in the clinical training of KNUST students. “KATH has been instrumental in the clinical training of nearly 95 percent of our health sciences students for almost 50 years.
This longstanding relationship necessitates our contribution. Beyond the monetary donation, our faculty’s expertise will support the renovation project,” he stated.
The HEAL Komfo Anokye Project, inaugurated by the Asantehene, aims to raise $10 million to refurbish Blocks A, B, C, and D of the hospital over two years. However, due to operational constraints, the project’s completion timeline has been extended to 36 months.
Chairman of the HEAL Komfo Anokye Project, Samuel Adu Boakye, acknowledged KNUST’s support and revealed that $4 million has been raised in the first five months. He expressed confidence in the ongoing commitment and support from the public.
“One challenge of the Heal KATH project is that the hospital must remain operational during renovations. This constraint has extended our timeline from 24 to 36 months.
Despite this, we are dedicated to the project, particularly with the support Ghanaians have shown,” Boakye remarked. Professor Agyare also called on the public to support the project, noting the mutual benefits the long-standing relationship between KNUST and KATH has provided.
He highlighted plans for KNUST to continue prioritizing and strengthening its partnership with KATH, including the upcoming construction of an ultra-modern office and lecture hall complex at the hospital.
