The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Students’ Representative Council (SRC) and the Department of Students Affairs (DoSA) are responding to the recent devastating floods in Ayeduase with immediate relief efforts and long-term solutions aimed at preventing future incidents. Following the floods, the SRC swiftly mobilized a team of officers to assess the impact on affected students.
In a letter dated June 29, 2024, KNUST SRC President, H.E Yvonne Osei Adobea, outlined the SRC’s response, stating that within 48 hours of the flood, the team had already begun assessing the needs of those affected. Based on the team’s findings, the SRC has implemented the following measures:
- Accommodation Support: The SRC, in collaboration with DoSA, is providing temporary accommodation at the SRC Hostel for students who lost their homes in the floods. The payment process for room allocations has already begun.
- Welfare Support: The SRC is providing essential welfare support, including food items, to those affected by the flood.
- Drainage System Improvement: Long-term plans are being developed to improve the drainage system in Ayeduase to mitigate the impact of future rainfall events.
H.E Yvonne Osei Adobea also highlighted the importance of consistent communication and collaboration between DoSA and the SRC. She emphasized that reforms have been made to the frequency and effectiveness of joint hostel inspections and grading by the two bodies.
In a statement expressing solidarity with affected students, H.E Yvonne Osei Adobea highlighted the importance of ensuring student welfare both on and off campus. “We stand with our fellow students in this difficult time,” she stated. “We are committed to doing everything within our power to support them in their recovery and to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.”
