Archbishop Criticizes Youth Social Media Use; Calls for Constructive Engagement

The Archbishop of Cape Coast, Most Rev. Charles Palmer-Buckle, has highlighted the adverse impacts of social media on the productivity of Ghanaian youth. During a Roman Catholic Church youth rally in Assin Fosu, he noted that platforms like TikTok distract young people from their daily responsibilities, leading to unproductive use of time.

He urged the youth to use social media constructively, acquiring new skills and seeking valuable information instead of following unnecessary trends. The four-day rally, attended by about 2,000 youths, included prayer sessions and various social activities.

“Social media, especially TikTok, has rendered most youth idle, as they devote much time there instead of using the time productively. Use your social media profitably; use it to learn new skills and search for valuable information instead of following unnecessary trends online,” Archbishop Palmer-Buckle advised.

Reverend Ntim Fordjour also emphasized the importance of utilizing individual talents for the benefit of the church and the country, encouraging the youth to create their opportunities locally rather than seeking success only overseas. The rally featured around 2,000 youths from 11 deaneries in the Central Region, engaging in prayer sessions and social activities over four days.
