The Student Representative Council (SRC) of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has issued a statement in response to the recent introduction of a GH₵100 miscellaneous provision fee for all students of public universities in Ghana. According to a letter dated March 18, 2024, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GETC) and Parliament have approved the new fee, which has been met with concern from students.
The KNUST SRC has expressed understanding of the burden this additional fee places on students, who are already facing financial challenges. In a statement released by the SRC’s Public Relations Officer, Belinda Nketia, the council has urged students to remain calm and supportive as they work together with student councils from other institutions to negotiate a resolution.
The SRC has also engaged with various stakeholders over the past 24 hours to address the sudden implementation of the fee and explore ways to alleviate its impact on students. The KNUST SRC’s swift response aims to address the concerns of students and ensure that their interests are represented in the face of this new development.
