In a collaborative effort to enhance the digital well-being of its students, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) recently organized a workshop focused on cyber security and best practices for social media usage. The event, conducted in partnership with the KNUST Peer Counsellors and the Ghana Internet Safety Foundation (GISF), aimed to equip participants with the necessary skills to identify cyber threats and scams.
Led by experts from GISF, the workshop covered a range of topics, including cybercrimes, online safety, and secure social media practices. The President of KNUST Peer Counsellors, Mr. Francis Anarfo, emphasized that the program was designed to educate peer counsellors and students on cybercrime issues and promote internet safety awareness.
He expressed the commitment of his organization to organizing similar programs in the future. President of GISF, Emmanuel Adinkrah, highlighted the introduction of the Cyber Clinic Helpline Application, which enables swift reporting of harmful online content.
A cyber-trauma specialist from GISF, Dr. Samuel Tinagyei, emphasized the psychological impacts of cyber threats and advocated for the integration of mental health support into cyber safety protocols. A cyber specialist from the Cyber Crime Unit of the Ghana Police Service, Daniel Ofori, provided practical guidance on reporting cyber incidents and navigating legal procedures.
A Board Director at SCARS, Dr. Tim McGuinness, shed light on online threat dynamics, empowering counsellors with insights into predatory behaviors and scam mechanisms. Sharing tips for combating cybercrime, Dr. McGuinness highlighted the importance of caution, documentation, and verification of sources.
He urged individuals to research companies or individuals involved, look for reviews and complaints, and verify contact information for official websites, especially if the scam involves a government agency or organization. The workshop aimed not only to raise awareness about digital safety but also to equip participants with practical knowledge and tools to navigate the evolving landscape of cyber threats.
KNUST continues its commitment to ensuring the well-being of its students in the digital realm.
