The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology’s (KNUST) Debating Society has showcased unparalleled excellence, clinching prestigious titles at national, continental, and global levels. With an impressive streak of victories at the Ghana Universities Debate Championship (GUDC) and Pan-African Universities Debate Championship (PAUDC) and a remarkable performance at the World Universities Debate Championship (WUDC), KNUST has firmly established itself as a force to be reckoned with in the world of debate.
At GUDC 2023, held on home ground, KNUST secured its sixth championship title, with standout debaters Kwadwo Opoku Acheampong and Furgurson Awuni leading the charge. Their dominance continued at PAUDC 2023, where KNUST clinched its fourth championship, setting a record for the most PAUDC titles won. The global stage witnessed KNUST’s prowess as well, with an impressive 1st Runner-Up position at WUDC 2024, surpassing esteemed institutions worldwide.
Individual achievements further underscored KNUST’s dominance, with debaters like Kelvin Asamoah Damptey and Kojo Acheampong securing top positions in various categories. Notably, Damptey’s victory in the World Public Speaking Championship solidified KNUST’s global reputation for excellence.
The support and sponsorship from the university management have been instrumental in the Debating Society’s success, as acknowledged by Professor Kofi Ohene Owusu-Daaku, the society’s patron. Vice-Chancellor Professor Rita Akosua Dickson commended the society’s commitment to excellence and assured continued support, recognising their potential to excel in future competitions.
