Economist, Mr Evans Nunoo has advised the government of Ghana to find a new and favorable way of increasing taxes in the country since the taxes being imposed on citizens are regressive. According to him, imposing taxes would make things expensive which would in turn make living difficult for Ghanaians.
“I think the government would have to find a good way to introduce taxes because these taxes seeking to control pollution by vehicles are quite regressive. Already people driving taxis and trotro are not middle-class so car owners would take what they are still taking which would make these drivers suffer.”
“This makes it regressive, it means that we are improvising the poor. If the government is introducing taxes on V8, range over and the like, I would not have to complain because that will be called progressive but I must say that some of these taxes are quite regressive, and the government must find new strategies for imposing and implementing these taxes,” he explained on Focus FM’s Teknokrat show with Audrey Sika Dzifa.
Mr. Evans Nunoo suggested that the government should strengthen taxes already in the system instead of creating new ones. “They should strengthen the already existing taxes in the system because we already have taxes in the system that they are not collecting effectively.
I think they have to make sure that they are effective in the system. Sometimes they take taxes and it doesn’t even go to the local government, because I have parked my car several times and paid for a ticket only to go home and realizes that it is not even on the car,” he said.
